Four days ago, I was at Comic-Con, being turned away from a panel I'd waited for an hour and 45 minutes to get into because the room had been declared full. As I trudged toward the Convention Center's exit, I thought back to when the broadcast part of the workshop got to see Year One by breezing to the front of the line with our press badges, and found myself reeeeeeeally wishing I had a press badge when it counted. Oh well, the Con was plenty fun anyway!

Hey everybody, how goes it?

The earliest I have woken up since the workshop has probably been 9:30 at least. Its refreshing, though I do miss the early morning newspaper readings. I've had a very busy month, The Socialists played our first show. It was literally crazy. We managed to sell 50 presale tickets, and had about 70 people at our show. The show itself was terribly perfect. We broke guitar strings, forgot chorusus, our drum kit fell over in the middle of the set, and I even bled on stage. Our mistakes made it perfectly punk-rock. Besides that, my friends and I started a music/movie reviewing website, and we are updating it at least three times a day. Check it out SuperSketchy or follow us on the all-powerful Twitter

I really had a great time at the workshop. It was nice getting to know all the editors and volunteers (or as Leonel calls them, a bunch of misfits), and I'm glad I made friends with my fellow campers. Congradualations to Andrea and Rachel on the scholarships, and to everyone else for finishing the program without killing eachother.

THE WORKSHOP! and waking up so early...NOT! haha
I couldn't be happier with this program! I got three stories in the paper and completed my first video package. I met some amazing people I will never forget and learned so much. I know now this is definatly something I want to continue and I'm just so thankful I was given the opportunity to participate in this...I got everything I wanted to get out of it and more! To all the editors I worked with aka Jose, Tammy, Mr. Feldman, even Gail :/! lol, I thank you so much! Also Dean Nelson, Janine, Hiram, Jen, Claudia and all the speakers were awesome too! Congrats to Andrea on the scholarship...roomies for life! I love you girlieee :) And Joe! Good job! So glad I got to work with you and learn how to use some pretty tough video stuff lol! Congrats to Christina too! And everyone else you were amazing! I learned something from everyone and I hope we all get together and keep in touch! As I get ready to walk outside my dorm room, I am saddened by the fact that this is the last day. The workshop has been a wonderful experience and the students have been great. I don't know if there are any future journalists in the group (I hope at least one or two give it a shot), but I know they will be successful in whatever they elect to do. They are hard working and talented. They know how to communicate. I am very proud of you all.

I'm really impressed with the newspaper. The students did an excellent job, writing stories, taking photos and designing the paper (with the generous help of Jen). It's very professional looking and it is filled with a diversity of stories. You all should be proud. What an accomplishment in just over one week's time.

What I learned from 19 students

My decade-long relationship with journalism hit the skids in recent months.
Newspapers were closing and readers didn't care.
I was adopting the "I'm taking my marbles and going home" attitude .
Mature, I know.
Then I watched Andrea chase a bow-tie wearing man through the food court of Horton Plaza. She scored a 10-minute interview with this big-time doctor on the subject of tattoos.
A huge smile conquered my face. My heart was beating with passion again. I wanted to sing!
She completed the interview and I honestly don't know who was happier -- me or Andrea.
A few hours later, my joy doubled.
I didn't know I could get happier.
Joe and I dug into some court records and scored gold.
We found documents that told us about the life and times of a murder victim.
WOW!!
Each day of the workshop I had a significant moment with a student.
These exchanges served to remind me why I do this, why I love it.
I found my love again. I want to sing.

All of you have talent that changes the world in some way.
You've changed my little universe.
Its a gift I can never repay and will never forget.

The staff of the CCNMA workshop finished the workshop. We had help from many of the volunteers and the instructors of the workshop. Without them we would not have been able to have completed the paper. We worked on it for six days. I edited all the photos and created the centerspread with help from Senior Staff Photographer John Gibbins. Hope you like the newspaper!

There is a sense of calm when you are finished. Just relief. When my friends from my high school journalism class asked me what this experience was like, I told them it's like deadlines week for ten days. That basically shut them up. And to think I want to do this as a career. To have the rush of getting assigned a breaking news article. Put yourself out there by interviewing important people, non-important people, kids, adults, scum bags and angels. And then the newsroom. And the waiting. And the writing. And erasing. The final product. In the real world we'll be doing this on a daily basis. It's draining to think about. I need a nap.

The Mojos

Watching Hillary, Remi and Andrea going out on assignment and I feel like I'm watching the future of journalism. They're going to videotape a press conference on meth abuse. Andrea is the producer and Remi and Hillary are the reporters. Jose called them mojos, short for mobile journalists. I call them the future and the future is now because they're doing it!

I'm heading back to my regular job as a staff writer at the Union-Tribune in about 15 minutes. I'll drop by after work but it won't be the same as last week and I'll miss it. We learn so much from our young people and that makes us better people. I learn a lot also from my colleagues. I kid Jose Arballo a lot but he knows I love him like a brother. He's a true leader.

Day one of the second week. I am extremely tired. I have finished my stories, and I am psyched to do layout. I layed out most of the crime page, but I need to add the jump.
This workshop has been a lot of fun and work. I've improved my writing skills and most importantly realized that there is much more to learn about journalism and writing. The workshop has served as an amazing foundation for the beginning of my journalism career.

This year we are being powered by the energy of the two Joses, Jose Arballo and Jose Jimenez; both sit at the head of our newsroom. They're one in the same but out of that union we have this fighting, feisty spirit that pervades our workshop. Believe me that's good because we got to get this paper out on time. They're friendly actually. Picture a two-headed Shrek monster. One of them answered the phone the day and in a smarmy voice said 'This is Jose, not the shorter one but the more handsome one.' I think the caller said, so which Jose am I talking to?

Rock stars in the courthouse

Spent the morning in my favorite place -- a courthouse -- with two rock stars, Joe and Julian.
We got a glimpse into a family's nightmare:
A man's life ended in the most brutal fashion while the two teenagers he raised will spent the rest of their lives in prison.
Nothing but ugly.
But, it makes for a great story!

Going to the padres game was definitely a highlight of the week... having a camera man stick a camera in your face can sure take some getting used to. Seventeen stories are in and 12 are in progress.

Highlights of who I've worked with thus far:
-Went with Tasha on assignment for interviews with a cafe manager and bartender for her restaurant service commentary in PB and La Jolla
-Met "Sam the Cooking Guy" with Remi at his kitchen in Carmel Valley while Daniela took hundreds of photos - no, we did NOT get to sample any food
-Attended a sermon on the current state of gay marriage in Mission Hills with Tasha and Lola. Daniela took photos from above the pews with the help of John. Ran into Peggy who was also there taking photo for the UT
-Listened to speakers at an education protest in Spring Valley with Joseph, Leonel, Daniela and John
-Drove to a press conference downtown about recycling tires with Karen on a last minute suggestion by Jose. It was over by the time we got there but we managed to get the contact info for the councilman sponsoring it
-Toured the Body Worlds exhibit at the San Diego Natural History Museum with Rachel - sickening and informative at the same time
-Read Remi's article about students trying to find summer jobs
-Gave Sofia feedback on her Border Field State Park story

Gunther von Hagens latest masterpiece...HA!!! :) I got the privilege of going to the Body Worlds exhibit with Alex :) Had an awesome time! Favorite part? I got a media pass!!!! Lol :) And was able to take pictures of the bodies (which no one else was able to do!) We got in for free! With a pretty fatty press kit i might add :) hahah...the week is over and in my opinion went by way too quickly. I'm learning so much! Cant wait to go back as editor for the school newspaper... have so many ideas now! This was a GREAT opportunity and I am so grateful I was accepted to participate. Just about to start my third story...there were pancakes this morning!!! Too bad they were quite disappointing :/ Everyones going home this weekend..to auntie's house I go! Lol :) Looking forward to some sleep and a break from the newsroom even though I think journalism is instilled in me now :) ha!

After a long and hard week I can easily say I'm ready for the weekend. I've learned A LOT this week, probably more than I learned in the three years that I was part of my school newspaper staff.
I started my third article last night which is a movie review on Away We Go. I was able to find all of the information I was looking for plus more. I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie today and being able to give some of my own perspective on it.
I've gotten a pretty good start on the article even though I have yet to see the movie. I've covered just about everything I can think of as far as background information but now I am researching the soundtrack.
Sure gonna miss the computer lab this weekend! NOT.

But thank you to all the editors who have been working hard to help us with interviews, editing our papers and providing us with some humor. :]

Today was the best yet! I finished both my stories with the help of Tammy, Jose, Gail and Mr. Feldman. I actually started writing my court story today and was able to finish it all! Love you Tammy! :) Haha...found out I'm Jose's favorite student! Lol! And that maybe one day I'll die from hiccups...ha! Dinner was interesting...Andrea made me laugh :) And a random girl gave me a napkin out of the blue...guess not everyone at that church camp is completely wild lol! Don't know what to do now...I think I'm getting another story. If so I either want to do a review of some kind or cover a sports story. Well thats all for now...

So right now I am posting on the blog, after Jose telling me like ten times. I am having a blast in the Broadcast part of this workshop and I am really looking forward to finishing our newscast and our Anchor auditions tomorrow.

A Broadcaster's Point of View

So this blog's been dominated by print kids, so I think it's time you get a taste of a day of a broadcast student. It's been fun at NBC -- I think my favorite part is using my badge to open the doors that non-NBC hoi polloi can't get through! HA!

I initially signed up for print, so everything about broadcast news is totally new to me. Writing for TV is completely different than writing newspaper articles -- no cleverness or impressive vocabulary allowed. I prefer article writing, but I'm glad I'm learning this. It's challenging, but fun in its own way.

Editing tape is also really interesting. I can't do it myself, but I watched one of the NBC editors put together my story on swine flu today & it was awesome.

Our broadcast for Tuesday is going well. In fact, it's going too well. We're already overtime & need to cut stories. A little depressing, but still a better problem to have than too few stories.

Also, news anchor Marty Levine's a really cool dude.

BROADCAST RULES!!!! WOOHOO

I am having a great time in the broadcast side of this workshop!!
I went out on my first story today and it was fascinating. I went out to Tierravista elementary school and to De Portola middle school. I did my first broadcast Package on the bell schedule change. It was really interesting. While I was at De Portola I did a stand up.....hehehe I was on camera! I am so excited to see the finished product! Everyone at the NBC 7/39 is so nice and helpful. Jenell is great and has the patience to deal with us crazy broadcast kids. I am loving every minute of broadcast! I have learned so much and I have a new found passion for news, journalism and broadcast. This has been an amazing opportunity and it's only half way through. I have made friends that will last a life time.

Sooooo, I'm probably considered the biggest BULLY out of the whole journalism group of students.
I told off a kid for cutting me in the food line when all he was doing was getting some Chilli...and I kinda cussed another one out for spilling his limonade and dropping half of his hamburger in my bag and feet, all in a period of less than 30 minutes...not to mention both kids are here in a Christian camp and one of the incidents happened in front of Mr. Feldman. Great. I'm going to hell.

I'm looking forward to today! I kinda like all the stress of making your deadlines and finishing the story, it feels more official :) Lol! I'm almost done with my Milk story and can't wait to start writing my court story! I left a message for the D.A. yesterday so I'm hoping he calls me back, but I'm sure he's busy in court. Love hearing about everyone's assignments yesterday, especially Melinda's! Way cool! :)

The weekends almost here, came way too quick in my opinion! Hope to go to court again Monday...Lola is AWESOME! haha thanks for taking me the other day and helping me with interviewing!

I just heard about some unlucky guy that got his computer totally destroyed by a foul ball at the Padres game we went to last night. Wow that seriously sucks. I mean really. If there was a way for something to suck, blow, and bite at the same time, that would be it. Seriously.

Well I should have at least the first draft of my second article done by today, which should hopefully save me some time for the rest of the workshop duration.

OK, I admit it, I am surrounded by rock star students.
I went to work at my courthouse today (with Rock Star Malinda) and found myself thinking: "What is Andrea doing?" and "I wonder how Joe's story is coming along."
Malinda and I had a great time covering the greatest preliminary hearing of all time. (Her story is gonna rock.)
But, while I was having fun, my thoughts often returned to all of you.

After many moments of nervousness, crazy trips to downtown, interviewing, stressing, and even a few tears (yeah..weird), I FINALLY finished my first story!
Unfortunately, today I found out the court case for my second story isn't happening anymore, and I wont get to see Tammy's cat! :'(
But I will now be working with Leonel on a swine flu story. (:

Today's lunch was pretty interesting. We got to hear some anecdotes from our editors about students in previous workshops. Both the good and the not so good. Haha, pretty crazy stuff. It all made me wonder what their thoughts on us are already, how much have they changed since the beggining of the workshop, and how much different will they be once it's all over?
I'm hoping it will all be positive. Or not...because it seems like they get more of a kick out of the crazy, not so good stuff in the long run. Hah.
I'm just kidding. (:
They get a kick out of it from the very beginning. (AHAHA) ok no. I'm seriously kidding this time.
Anyway, Im sure at least one editor will read this, and I might get in trouble...I dont know. But if any editor that is reading this doesn't mind answering to the questions about what your thoughts are regarding us students, that'd be AWESOME (:
Okay, I'll stop blabbering all over this thaang.

Yeah, what up I guess... This is my first post here.... I guess I'll be boring and say that after that decent into hell that I had to go through to get to the border yesterday...and then from there going to the luxury Hotel Del Coronado (I hope I can get pictures of that place up soon), I finally finished my first article. No rest for the weary however, as I've got one more that's gotta be finished by Monday.

Jose is going to the baseball game today and we couldn't be happier. All of a sudden he's got this bounce to his step and his eyebrows are arching upward. We're hoping he catches a ball. Actually he's taking some students and we will be writing stories about the Pads. Thank you Dean Nelson for getting us in.

I'm waiting for the SD Coast District Office to call me back.
In the mean time, I will write in our blog.
I'm glad I was chosen to come to this workshop.
I think I've learned how to take efficient notes during an interview.
I've learned that I can't antagonize people I am interviewing, especially the border patrol.
I realized that I like outlines of my story before I get started on writing.
I'm excited to go to the court case tomorrow :)

to finally be just about finished with my first article. I've gone through my first process of editing and now I'm on to the next. Hopefully by the end of the day, I will be done. My second articles on prop 8 has a pretty solid start and I'm excited to see what kind of interviews I can get at the celebration of same sex marriage this evening. I'm pretty exhausted though and I need a nap or a huge cup of coffee to get my brain to start functioning correctly again.

We are SO lucky!

Mid week craziness

We are at the midway point of the first week at the workshop. Stories seem to be coming together and editing is taking place. We have a busy day planned that includes trips to the Padre game, a vigil and gathering to remember the anniversary of the day same-sex couples could get married. Remi has an interview with someone named Sam "the cook." Sounds like a blast.

So this is my first time posting a blog : ) I'm having an AMAZING time here! This workshop has so far exceeded my expectations. Everyone is friendly and dedicated, I have a lot of confidence our newspaper will rock! I went to court today and that was really interesting. I didn't necessarily get what I went for, but I got to see the court system firsthand and met the defense attorney. He almost seemed like a superstar! Lol :) I was nervous on what to ask but by Monday I should have most of the outcome of the decision. Tomorrows going to be a good day, I know it! I plan to meet my deadline and am excited to have my story edited by the pros! haha!

Going out on my first assignment today was pretty exciting (:
The worst case scenario happened when I got to Pokez (the place I was supposed to have an interview) and they told me it wouldn't be possible anymore ! Ayyayayyy.
I still got to interview two men on the street and one of them got to be a pretty important dude with interesting opinions (:
Jose gave us wrong directions while in downtown so we got lost for a bit...haha.
Tammy is the coolest editor.

Although I initially felt overwhelmed by the demands of the workshop, I have to admit I am glad I committed to this program. The second day has so far been a more realistic looking glass into what the journalism world can offer us, even in this unstable time. Working independently feels good, especially after having just graduated high school, where everyone holds your hand throughout your learning experience. Persistence, almost to the point of obnoxiousness, but not quite, is key to getting the information you need. This week will be long...but well worth the hard work.

While staring at the ceiling I can't help but think about a short discussion that Andrea and I had about the significance work plays in our lives. Through my limited knowledge of philosophy I've come up with one possible explanation by borrowing from my good friends Jean-Paul Sartre and Karl Marx. That because there isn't a universal, absolute meaning to life, we must create our own; and in order to do so we must find work that is meaningful to our community and ourselves.

In the past few days I've met some amazing people that I believe take true pride and dignity out of their work as Journalist. I have trouble expressing the gratification and respect I have towards them for using their experience to pass the torch to a new generation of Journalist. While we may not all follow in their footsteps, I think I speak for all of the workshop students in saying that this camp is a tremendous opportunity for all of us, and that we all can not thank you enough for putting on this program.

Even though it was a little overwhelming from time to time, my first day was pretty good. I'm feeling rather exhausted however. So far it seems everyone is getting along and we have a solid group of dedicated workers.

Tomorrow should be hard trying to figure out our stories in order to get down to business!

The Vox newspaper has been created at the CCNMA High School Journalism Workshop at Point Loma Nazarene University. Here the members of the Vox staff will describe what they do, how they did it and what they learned. The students met each other today and received their first assignments. They also got to hear themselves singing karaoke and laughing at each other. Work starts tomorrow.
